In 1962, the natural gas activity was limited to the exploitation of STEG's factory of El Omrane which ensured the supply of 25.000 customers of the town of Tunis with, only, manufactured gas. In 1962, the consumption did not exceed 6 Ktep.
In 1972, the gas network had known its first development by the recovery of the associated gas of El Borma, which allowed the installation of the LPG factory in Gabès used for the recovery of condensate.
In 1982, the gas network knew a larger expansion with the construction of the gas pipeline connecting Algeria to Europe via Tunisia . The mentioned gas pipeline was doubled in 1994. The same year, the field of Miskar entered in to service.
The assessment of the STEG, 44 years after its creation is extremely edifying: The global rate of electrification passed from 21% to 99.2% (the rural rate of electrification passed from 6% into 98%). The working installed capacity passed from 100 MW to, actually, 3.250 MW. The electrical generation passed from 288 GWH to 12.127 GWH and the specific consumption of the generation park was brought back from 395 to 239 Tep/GWH. The number of electricity customers passed from 183.000 to 2.600.000 .
Concerning the gas, the consumption reached 3.617 Ktep and the number of customers passed, end 2005, from 25.000 into 238.500.
